What’s in the bag?
GCI Turf Heat Wave is a 3 way mixture of high quality Bermuda Grass seed. These three varieties are very similar and will blend well together.
***It is recommended you NOT overseed with ryegrass until year two of bermudagrass establishment.
We became known for having “weed free” grass seed and the new ones are no different. All the new grass seed mixes/blends are 0% weed seed and 0% other crop.
How long does grass seed stay good? About 2 years if kept dry
A good starter fertilizer goes a long ways when it comes to seeding. Read this STARTER FERTILIZER GUIDE.
We look for three basic things when choosing the varieties that go in our grass seed mixes/blends. It must be readily available to us, it must have an excellent history in the NTEP trials (National Turf grass Evaluation Program), and it must be affordable.
RIVIERA: Is a certified turf grass that produces quality bermuda grass with great winter hardiness. Riviera bermuda grass establishes fast from seed. Highest quality-rated Riviera is known for resistance to winter kill, drought tolerance, color, spring green-up.
MAYA: Scored exceptionally well for excellent color, disease resistance, improved turf performance and leaf texture.
BLACKJACK: Is a dense, dark green warm season turf. This vigorous, fine-bladed cultivar adds color and density to any Bermuda grass. Blackjack has excellent cold tolerance.
High quality Bermuda grass seed is not cheap like some common bermuda grasses. We use coated Bermuda grass seeds which help in the germination but also add to the cost. We could easily put together a mix or blend that would be the “best of the best”, but, the cost would also reflect that. We prefer to offer a very high quality grass seed at an affordable price.
How much seed do you use?
Over seeding into an existing Bermuda lawn: One – two (1-2) pounds per 1000 square feet.
Seeding bare ground: Three – four (3-4) pounds per 1000 square feet.
When should you plant Bermuda grass?
Spring – Summer is a great time to seed bermuda grass. You definitely do not want to seed bermuda too early in the spring. Be sure that all chances of a late spring frost are gone. Plant bermuda seed when soil temperatures are consistently above 65° F. Your air temperature should be around 80° at this time. To check your soil temperatures be sure and use a very high quality SOIL THERMOMETER to ensure accuracy. For late Summer planting, do not plant 90 days before the first expected frost. You will need plenty of time to germinate and grow your bermuda grass before the first fall frost. At that time your bermuda grass will go dormant for the winter.
Bermuda grass seed requires a lot of water to get going. Water multiple times a day, every day to ensure the ground and seed stays moist. Bermuda seed can take anywhere from 14-30 days to germinate depending on environmental conditions.
I bet you are wondering why only 49.45% of the bag is actual grass seed and 50.55% is inert matter. This is simple and typical for bermuda seed. Bermuda grass seed is coated to help with germination. It is also dyed so you can identify and see it well. The combination of the coating and the dye make up 50% of the bag. There is an actual 10 pounds of Bermuda seed in a 10 pound bag and 25 pounds of actual Bermuda seed in a 25 pound bag.
